WooCommerce or Shopify to get into ChatGPT?
In Italy, on ChatGPT, today you pay for the slot under the answer. Not checkout.

This week in Italy, ChatGPT has ads. Not checkout.
OpenAI extended ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets on August 18. In Italy the ads started around the 24th, on Free and Go. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu: no ads. On August 31 the self-serve Ads Manager beta arrived, including for SMEs. India opens self-serve on September 4. I’m writing this on the 3rd.
If someone tells you to move to Shopify “to get into ChatGPT”, they’re mixing three things. Showing up in an answer. Buying the slot under that answer. Letting the customer pay inside the chat. The second one, as of about ten days ago, you can buy with an Italian VAT number. The third, if you sell in Italy, Shopify still keeps for US buyers. The first depends on feeds, product pages, claims. None of the three asks you to tear down WooCommerce.
I work with WooCommerce and Shopify. I pick by project, not habit. This is not a platform war. I’m trying to stop people migrating for a channel that, in Italy, is not what they’re being sold.
Three things that are not “being on ChatGPT”
A store owner asks me: “Do I need to go to Shopify because ChatGPT sells?” I ask whether they want to show up in the answer, buy the slot underneath, or take payment in chat. Usually they don’t know.

Showing up in an answer means the model cites you, or pulls you from a catalog, because the data is readable. Title, price, stock, shipping, attributes. Not the animated H1. Not the cookie policy at the top of llms.txt. You can do that from Woo. You can do that from Shopify. You can also do it badly on both if the feed is dirty.
Paid space is a different job. The ad sits under the answer, labeled, visually separate. OpenAI says you can’t pay to move the model’s text. The advertiser doesn’t read the chat: they see aggregate impressions and clicks. In Europe, at least at the start, no personalized ads. Targeting starts from the conversation context, not the bot’s memory. Repubblica wrote that on August 19, citing the FAQs. Pixel and Conversions API exist. CPM, then CPC, now conversion optimization too. Sound familiar? It’s an auction. It just happens while someone is explaining to an assistant what they need.
Checkout in chat is the third. The agent proposes, the customer pays without opening your theme. On Shopify it’s called Agentic Storefronts, it runs on Catalog and UCP. On paper it’s nice. On geography, less so.
What Shopify is still selling you, and to whom
I say this because it’s still true, not because it’s today’s news. The June 18, 2026 staff article is still what Shopify puts in the FAQ: purchases on AI channels are for US buyers. The store can sit in Milan. Who completes the order, for now, does not.
On ChatGPT, if you’re in Catalog and sell to the United States, the customer closes on your store, in an in-app browser. Copilot: same audience, embedded checkout if you’re eligible. Gemini and AI Mode: a few US brands, same rule.
The numbers Shopify waves around (AI traffic up eight times, orders from AI search up thirteen times in Q1) are on their stores, mixed with the US. They are not the forecast for an Italian catalog.
There is an Agentic Plan: put products in Catalog without replatforming. Sidecar, not a migration. You pay on transactions that go through Shopify Checkout. For an Italian selling in Italy today, that’s a bet on an American audience. It is not “I’m finally in ChatGPT”.
Woo, on Monday
WooCommerce does not expose UCP on its own. yourdomain/.well-known/ucp is a 404 by default.
From Woo 10.3 there is native MCP: catalog, stock, orders. That is not pay-in-chat. People talk about 10.9 as the finish line. While the protocol is still moving, I would not wire production checkout to a plugin downloaded on a Tuesday.
UCP/ACP plugins exist. Discovery, sometimes a checkout session. They are not Agentic Storefronts. They don’t have automatic syndication into ChatGPT. Anyone promising that is selling a landing page.
What I would do, concretely.
Clean the Google/Meta feed. Product schema. Real stock and price, not cached on the route a bot will read. An llms.txt that does not start with the cookie policy. Keep product claims locked down. If you sell supplements, a model that paraphrases “cures” is not doing GEO for you. It’s creating a problem.
Then, if it makes sense, a ChatGPT Ads test. Self-serve, beta, approved categories. In the trial, OpenAI mostly keeps lifestyle, home, local services, travel, digital, training. Health, health claims, finance, legal: slow entry, manual, case by case. Everything else at launch is out. A regulated catalog is not “turn it on and go”. It’s “read the policy, then decide if the queue is worth it”.
Matching landing page. Pixel. Small budget. Don’t rebuild the platform for a box under a Free-tier answer.
Monday, in order
First: which of the three you want. Discovery, ads, checkout in chat. If the answer is “all of them”, you’re still mixing them up.
Then the data. The agent and the ad read that, not your theme.
Then the claims. On ads, OpenAI keeps health copy on a short leash. That matches what I see on regulated catalogs. Not a detail. The filter.
Then, if you want, the ads test. If you want Shopify Catalog without tearing down Woo, the Agentic Plan exists. It remains a US bet. Not a reason to migrate the store.
The Woo-to-Shopify migration is another conversation. Costs, plugins, maintenance, the risk of a Tuesday update. I do that work. Not here. The August announcement does not decide it.
FAQ
Do I need to switch to Shopify to show up in ChatGPT? No. In Italy today, the space you can buy is ChatGPT Ads, under the answer, Free and Go plans. Shopify’s in-chat checkout stays on US buyers. To get cited, you work on feeds and product data, from Woo or from Shopify.
Can WooCommerce sell inside the chat? It can make itself readable. Native UCP: no. MCP from 10.3 is catalog and orders. Production checkout on a store with serious integrations is a risk today. Not a channel.
Can I already run ChatGPT ads from Italy? Yes, in self-serve beta since late August, if the category clears policy. Free and Go see the ad. Plus does not. In Europe, at the start, targeting is mostly conversation context, not model memory. Supplements and health claims: don’t assume you’re cleared.
If you’re in the middle, Woo growing, someone saying “migrate for AI”: stop. Which of the three tickets are you picking? Then audit feed, tracking, claims. Then, maybe, an ads test. Change platform if the stack demands it. Not because OpenAI turned on a sponsored box.
